报告题目：Urban Natural Systems in Contemporary Megacities: A New Perspective

Climate change and rapid urbanization have become two of the greatest challenges facing contemporary megacities. Most research focuses on designing new blue-green infrastructure and Nature-based Solutions to strengthen urban climate resilience. However, an important question remains largely unexplored: can cities also learn from the natural structures they have already preserved? Despite decades of intensive urban growth, some elements of Urban Natural Systems have maintained their continuity within the urban landscape. River valleys, forests, historical parks, cemeteries and selected agricultural areas have survived successive stages of urbanization despite changes in their size, function and spatial context. These elements may play a fundamental role in the spatial organization of contemporary Urban Natural Systems.

This lecture presents a new perspective that explores why these elements have persisted and what they reveal about the organization of megacities. Rather than asking only what new green infrastructure should be created, it asks what can be learned from the natural structures that cities have already preserved. This perspective may support comparative studies of megacities and future climate adaptation strategies.

Prof. Alicja Krzeminska is an ecologist, hydrogeologist, and chemist conducting multidisciplinary environmental research across various climate zones. She is a faculty member at the Institute of Geography and Regional Development at the University of Wrocław (Poland). Her research interests span a wide range of topics, including environmental issues in floodplain areas, bioindication of water contamination, and contemporary urban challenges from spatial, ecological, and systemic aspects, as well as the water footprint of cities. She is also interested in bionic cities of the future and food production within the urban fabric. Prof. Krzeminska conducts landscape research in urban areas as well as in post-industrial sites (such as post-mining, post-industrial, and degraded areas). She is a member of the Commission on Earth and Environmental Sciences, Wrocław Branch of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN).
